Four to six percent of school children have vision related problems which go undetected. Good visual acuity is very important for all the age groups but it holds greater importance for school going children. Poor vision in early ages of childhood affects performance in school, at work or in a social circle. Overall, it has a negative influence on the growth and development of the child. In rural or semi urban scenario in India, most of the parents and even school teachers are not oriented enough to focus on the visual health of a child. Sankara launched its first ever eye care program “Rainbow” for school going children in the year 1996. Since then, this massive Eye Care Programme has been focusing on providing a bright future to visually handicapped children – our future citizens. The program aims at:

  • Increasing early detection of eye diseases to prevent visual impairment in children.

  • Improve access to quality eye care in pre-school and school age children.

  • After the primary and secondary screenings, children requiring further evaluation for unexplained visual loss, surgically curable blindness or low vision rehabilitation would be referred to the base hospital.
